Abstract

Over the course of time, asymmetries have arisen in bioanthropological practice in Cuba. The objective of this paper is to reflect on the challenges this represents, by means of specific examples. Among the inequalities are the insufficient number of human resources, which is a challenge for the training of future generations of specialists, greater possibility of doing field work than laboratory work, financing problems, dependence on international projects, imbalances in the country itself, and difficulties with the visibility of the results in publications in high impact journals. As strategies to face the challenges we can mention the important contribution of students to research, the formation of multidisciplinary teams, foreign collaboration and the support of international projects and institutions. In spite of these asymmetries, there is a tradition and leadership in biological anthropology research in the country.
