Abstract
This essay investigates the intertwining between nature and education in book IV of Émile. It reflects on Rousseau's concept of nature as perspicacity and practical training of human beings and examines how such concept is intertwined with the education of taste. Next, it focuses on how Rousseau makes the ideal of simplicity spring from education grounded in natural taste, opposing it to the artificiality that prevails in the human and social relations of the time. It discusses how the way of living with oneself and with others in a simple and authentic way is the most appropriate spiritual form of life to face the destructiveness of self-esteem inherent in the human condition. In this sense, in the context young Emilio’s moral education, spirituality has to do with a simple and authentic way of life achieved through the education of taste.
