Abstract

This essay aims to analyze how three different speeches from different areas converge in a common explanatory framework. One of them is science, by endorsing the genocentric stance rooted in the Modern Synthesis of Biology. The second is religion, through its finalist account of the Soul, and by appealing to Devine Design, present in all Abrahamic religions. The last area involves social and political conservative movements that fight against the human rights agenda. The theoretical convergence that is present in the aforementioned areas is preformationism regarding living organisms. We will see, first, how preformationism is present in genocentrism in biology. Secondly, we will point out two important links regarding preformationism between biology and Abrahamic traditions. Finally, we will analyze how both discourses, the scientific and the religious, are present and playing an argumentative role in current debates on human rights, especially, concerning abortion and rights of the lgtbiq+ community. Our main conclusion would be that the Modern Synthesis in biology mistakenly promotes a defense of genetic preformation that, with religious connotations, is used by conservative movements in the socio-political ambit.
