Revolución y lucha armada: ¿una relación necesaria? El Movimiento de Liberación Nacional-Tupamaros y el Movimiento de Izquierda Revolucionaria en sus inicios (1965-1973).

Abstract

After the success of Cuban Revolution in 1959 and during the sixties; Latin America and the south cone in particular saw the raising of a potent revolutionary tide. It was believed that a new era of human history was being inaugurated, that people were attending the birth of the new society and that it’s delivery was so close that it only depended on people’s will and courage. Utopia was possible and revolution was imminent and urgent; it was an historical imperative. Armed fight was a fundamental part and the central strategy of this gamble through which people’s class conscience was going to be aroused and developed into the Latinoamerican independence from Yankee imperialism and national oligarchies.  
Through a socio-historical look on sixties and seventies continental context and a reflection from political philosophy regarding the concept of political violence, the present paper proposes a comparative between Uruguay’s Movimiento de Liberación Nacional-Tupamaros (MLN-T) and Chile’s  Movimiento de Izquierda Revolucionaria . (MIR). Said comparative is founded in this problematic: How the sixties revolutionary imagery is re-appropriated  by MLN-T and MIR in the Chile’s and Uruguay’s context. More specifically: What particularities could characterize the revolutionary struggle in Chile and Uruguay between 1965 and 1973? What similarities and differences are there between one and other project? To answer these questions it’s indispensable to contextualize and historicize the emergence and incipient consolidation reached by revolutionary movements in Chile and Uruguay in the proposed period, characterize, compare and understand their specifics as appropriations of revolutionary theory and practice.
